The Great Schism also known as the East and West Schism was a break or divide between the Christian Mideval churches.  There was also a large break between the two areas culturally with the east mostly following the ideas of the Byzantine Empire and the west following the ideas of the Holy Roman Empire.  There was also a more important idea in the difference in the churches theology.  The Eastern Church believed in having many patriarchs while the West had bishops, a theological difference was that the East liked to worship idles which the West hated.  Eventually they moved apart following their own language.  The West told the East they had to conform and they did not so Cardinal Humbert went to the east and excommunicated the east church and the leader Cerularius .  The east then excommunicated the West back and the Schism had officially taken place.
